The study of jazz and improvisation is a study of language, history and culture. It is my goal to ensure that each student has the necessary tools to communicate with their instruments, understand the music’s traditions, and discover their own unique voice. I believe it is the teacher’s responsibility to adapt to each student’s learning style and interests to create ways of imparting the fundamental elements of jazz and improvisation while encouraging the student’s own self-discovery and creativity. To develop the tools needed for improvisation, some of the fundamental topics include ear training, harmony, rhythm, chord structures, and learning to play off a lead sheet.
Additionally, in the case of students who might only have a classical background, I hope to support each musician in beginning to play their own music, using their ear and musical intuition as a guide.
